During our first few weeks of school we decided the MOST important part if building our classroom community. Here is how we have started to share our ideas and get to know each other during Language Block class.
What type of classroom do YOU want to be part of?

Welcome back from summer holidays!! This summer was a big summer for Ms. B who is now Mrs. B!! Not only did I get married, but we also traveled through Spain and Portugal, hiked to the summit of Mt. Meru and went on an Tanzanian safari. I am very excited to start my third year teaching at ASW. I can't wait to see returning smiles and meet our new students too. There are so many amazing websites out there, that sometimes you can forget about a few of your favorites!
This week, we rediscovered an oldie but a goodie site. Check out this site and stretch your wonderings...... This is a wonderful resource with videos, articles and sites all about dyslexia! Check it out!
It is that time of year again and Wrapped Up in Reading is here!!
Check out the books at the library that made this years list! This week we talked about an area that we thought we could improve as a group. We came to the conclusion that we need to "pump up" our listening skills. HOW do we do that? We PLAY GAMES!!
Here is an example of a listening game that we will play next week. Each time it is your turn you need to have someone else read the card to you & then you have to do the task on the card. For example one card might say, "can you put these items in order from lightest to heaviest?" (feather, shoebox, basketball, chair) It is important to not only listen to the question but also hold all of the information in your brain. This week we are launching into our new Unit of Inquiry! At home, take a few minutes to check out the videos, books and websites!
I have many parents and teachers ask about handwriting! I came across this article today and thought it was interesting! Check it out ....
This week we are launching into our SHARING THE PLANET -Unit or Inquiry. We are talking about conflict, resolution and how we can work together. Take a moment to watch this video from Kid President. What suggestions do you think would work for you?! This week we began diving into our new UOI. The students are exciting to start thinking about "Sharing the Planet" and what they know about conflict/resolution. What is conflict? We had a interesting conversation this week to try and brainstorm what CONFLICT is! Stay tuned while we learn more in the coming weeks! It was hard to switch our brains back on after THREE long weeks of vacation!!! We are happy to be back to school.
Stay tuned for more info!! Last week was Thanksgiving and as December starts off with a bang we are working on growing our happiness in class and throughout the school! Check out this site for ways to be grateful and build your happiness!
Don't forget to check out our Parent Page~
This week there is an interesting article about the difference between dyslexia and dysgraphia. On our first day back from vacation, we EXPRESSED ourselves using a variety of methods (writing, drawing, skits, and creative materials) about how we felt on our holiday.
Each student picked how they would express their emotions about their week away. We only had 15 minutes to create our drawing, skit or creation and the results were amazing!! Remember, there are many ways to express yourself! Which is your favorite? This week we started "thinking about our thinking" using a fancy word called METACOGNITION!
To practice using metacognition, we used thinking stems to help us talk about what we were thinking related to our mentor text, TUESDAY by David Wiesner. Using our thinking stems, what can you say about this page from our book? Often as we are learning more about ourselves as learners we discover that some things are harder for us than other things. Some students find that reading or/and writing can be challenging for them because their brain is wired differently.
I recently read this article that had great information related to Dyslexia. Check it out and let me know what you think! This week we are continuing to build our community in Learning Support. We have focused on what type of class we want to be apart of and what being CARING feels, sounds and looks like.
Today began thinking about our "passions" and how this can help us get to know ourselves as a learner. Take a few minutes to think about these questions and how does this help us learn more about ourselves? This week we continued to build our community through discussing what it looks like, feels like and sounds like to be CARING. We talked about examples from our Learning Support class, home, and school. Then we read "What if Everybody Did That..." to discuss what positive actions we could take to make our community even more caring. What if everybody smiled?!
This week is Learning Support we are discussing what it sounds like to have a GROWTH mindset. WE have talked about how your brain can grow and become stronger with practice & patience. We read a book together called, Salt In My Shoes, and made connections about how even Micheal Jordan had to work towards a growth mindset.
